Surrey's Most Bike-able Building Announced!
December 26, 2011

In a pilot project with the City of Surrey, four buildings were assessed for end of trip bicycle facilities, with the City Centre Library coming out on top. Some of the assessed factors include:

  • Undercover, secure parking
  • Showers and changerooms
  • Corporate culture in support of cycling

The Bike-able Building assessments use a points-based system to understand where a building stands in terms of bike-friendliness, and then recommendations are made on the most high impact changes to improve the number of people cycling to work or shop. In 2012, the VACC will be offering this service across the region.

Helmet Laws Make the Headlines Again
October 15, 2011

A recent court case challenging BC's helmet law has opened up debate on the topic. The VACC supports and encourages the use of helmets by cyclists of all ages, but also recognizes an adult’s right to make their own choice. The VACC believes that the over-emphasis of helmet use is detrimental to addressing important cycling safety issues. Although helmet use may reduce the severity of some injuries, the VACC believes the best measures to improve safety for cyclists are:
• Cycling education for both cyclists & motorists
• Cycling infrastructure for improved interactions between cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.
