The VACC's local advocacy committees meet regularly to discuss cycling issues specific to each municipality.
Each committee also has a discussion group.

Burnaby | The Langleys | Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows | New Westminster

General discussion - There is also a general online group, for discussion of general cycling issues and cycling topics for the entire Lower Mainland. Burnaby

  • Changes in Burnaby's Official Community Plan to better reflect needs of cyclists (2002)
  • Preservation of the Lougheed Highway bike lanes after construction of the Millennium SkyTrain line (2001)
  • Helped design the Victory (2005), Cariboo (2005), Sea to River (2004), and Southeast Burnaby (2003) bike routes

The Langleys

Current issues: We are looking forward to good things for the future of cycling in the two Langleys, which have seen tremendous growth in the number of both recreational and transportation cyclists in the last couple of years. We are in the process of establishing contacts with both Langley Township and City staff and political leaders as well as attempting to secure a meeting location.

Sidewalk cycling

Cycling on sidewalks isn't permitted in most of Greater Vancouver. New Westminster is the exception. Read the local bylaw.

  • pedestrian and cycling improvements on Queensborough Bridge (2006)
  • commitment for bike end-of-trip facilities at new high school (2005)
  • Boyd Street bike lanes in Queensborough (2004)
  • Non-slip surface on the sidewalks of the Alex Fraser Bridge (2003)
  • improved access ramps to both sides of Pattullo Bridge (2002)
  • A safe pedestrian overpass and bike signals on the Crosstown Greenway (2001)
  • Bike route across Moody Park (2001)
  • Completion of the Crosstown Greenway on 7th Avenue (2001)
  • creating of New West Bicycle Advisory Committee (2000)

If there's something that needs to be fixed within the City of New Westminster, you can fill out a Transportation Action Request Form with the city's Engineering Department.

North Shore

  • Cycling education and promotion through Bike to Work Week activities and the Commuter Cycling Skills Program.

City of Surrey Bike Survey Results - July 2009

The City of Surrey is reviewing its overall cycling plan. This survey was done in spring -- thanks to all who participated. We look forward to improved bike facilities in the future in Surrey! Please forward any Surrey bike issues or concerns to the VACC Surrey Committee so that we might include these in our efforts for better cycling in the City.

Successes

  • VACC representatives are being consulted in the study sessions for Coquitlam Town Centre and Lougheed Area cycling facilities and connections to the Evergreen Line (summer 2006)
  • VACC representative joined the Mayor of Port Moody on a study trip to the City of Portland's LRT system (spring 2006)
  • Foster Street advocacy ride during the spring of 2005 raised awareness and generated momentum to upgrade the Foster Street route
  • Public Awareness – Farmers' Market 2006, Fingerling Festival 2006, Grand Opening of the cycling/pedestrian overpass in Port Moody

Vancouver and UBC

Committee meetings

The VACC-Vancouver/UBC meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month (except July and December). If you ride your bike in Vancouver or at UBC, come meet and work with other cyclists to help improve local cycling facilities. All are welcome.

Date:

Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010. The meeting is the committee's summer social, and will be held at the park near the athletes' village, at 1st and Manitoba, in Vancouver.

Time:

6:00-8:30 pm. This is a special time, in order to catch an extra half hour of sunshine before they get down to serious business.

Location:

VACC office: Usually at the VACC HQ - 3 W. 3rd Ave. (at Ontario), but in August, will be at the park down the street.

Assessment rides

The VACC in Vancouver occasionally hosts assessment rides of the local bicycle network and provides input to the city. With your help, the VACC assesses cycling conditions with the intention of providing the city with constructive feedback from a cyclist’s perspective.

The rides are open to all and are at a moderate pace with plenty of stops along the way. Come and join us! (And don't forget your helmet.)

  • Bike bridge over the Fraser River to Richmond following the Canada Line (2009)
  • Bike lanes throughout the downtown core (2002-2006)
  • Wider sidewalks for cyclists on the Lions’ Gate Bridge, the Stanley Park Causeway, and the Viaduct (2002)
