Annual Reports

The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) is a staff-run, volunteer-driven non-profit society whose members work to improve conditions for cycling in the Lower Mainland. The VACC believes that increased bicycle use has the potential to:

• reduce traffic congestion,
• improve our health, and
• enhance our urban environment.

We work to change the circumstances that discourage bicycle use: inadequate cycling facilities, and lack of education for both cyclists and motorists. We do this by working with municipal, provincial, and federal politicians and government staff,
and by offering advocacy support and education to groups and individuals in the Lower Mainland.

Mission
To make cycling an integral part of the transportation culture.

Purpose

The purpose of the Society is:

a. to create, maintain and promote an association of cyclists in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia (hereinafter referred to as “the Lower Mainland”)

b. to improve conditions for cyclists and cycling in the Lower Mainland, including;

i) integrate cycling infrastructure within the transportation network,

ii)secure on-road and off-road infrastructure investments proportionate to cycling potential,

iii) improve facilities for bicycle use,

iv) improve cycling safety through education for cyclists, motorists, pedestrians, and others dealing with cycling,

v) improve the legal climate for cycling,

vi) facilitate communication between cyclists and governments or others, and

vii) develop a bicycling cycling information base.

c. to actively encourage more people to ride bicycles more often in order to reduce traffic congestion, improve their health and the health of others in the community, and enhance the urban environment.

Values

The VACC advocates for better conditions for cyclists and the removal of barriers to cycling. We achieve our objectives by meeting with governing agencies at all levels, writing well-researched, proactive letters and reports, working constructively with the media, and encouraging more people to cycle more often. The work of the VACC is grounded in the following values:

• We support a variety of styles and approaches to cycling.
• We value education and role-modelling for safe cycling.
• We respect those who use other forms of transportation.
• We value cycling as a community building tool, and as a healthy practice for individuals and our environment.
• We avoid funding or support that could compromise the integrity of our mission, purpose, or values.
• We seek positive legislative and policy change to make a lasting difference.
• Our membership is open to all who share our goals and values.

Background
The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition was established as a non-profit society in 1998 to address cycling issues in the Lower Mainland. Since then, we’ve established active local committees in Burnaby, Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, New Westminster, the North Shore, Surrey/White Rock, the Tri-Cities, and Vancouver/UBC.
